'85 325e 3rd brake light installation?

Dear Digesters,
Has anyone out there installed a factory 3rd brake light (rear deck) in 
a non-factory setup?  Is this just a matter of splicing into existing 
brake light wiring and then drilling a hole in the rear deck to install 
the light assembly, or is it more involved than that?  Does this create 
a problem with the OBC bulb monitoring system?  TIA.
