<e36>: light clutch / heavy clutch

I have a 94 325i that exhibits (what I consider to be) strange clutch
behavior.  Typically the clutch is slightly heavy, rubbery, and
sticky.  This is one of the early 3er clutches that chatters when it
gets hot.  If I run the car hard (redline in 2nd usually does it) the
clutch gets nice and light.  Anyone care to guess at what would cause
this kind of behavior?
