The car has had it's oil changed religiously at 3000 miles since new. My
mechanic says it is not uncommon to 250,000 without having to pull the head!

My '85 535i has 161K miles on it and has never had the head off.  I burn
about a quart per 1,000 miles, which is well within spec, I understand.

I too have heard that 250K is not unreasonable.
