<E30> sticky tachometer when cold

On my '91 M3, when the car is cold, as in being left for many hours,
the tach is sticky. I will take off and it might go to 2000 rpm and
the needle will just stay there for a while. Not good for trying to
monitor the rpms when the car is still warming up. After a while it
is fine and works normally. Anyone know what it might be and how I
might fix it?
Thanks!
