Cylinder head question

Hello,

I just purchased an '84 318i that needs some work, relatively simple things
but I have a question concerning the cylinder head. When I start the car I get
"steam" for about a minute or so, would it be safe to assume that I have a
cracked head or possibly a blown gasket?  Also the idle is not very smooth.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

PS The Bentley manual is on the way.
