1995 E34 525ia Wood Finish

The finish on the wood that is around the shifter has become scratched.
I have tried to lift the plastic fitting that holds the auto manual
switch and has the slot for tie shifter in it.  The side where the auto
manual switch comes up easily however the side nearest the passenger
does not want to just pull up.  I am obviously missing something. can
someone tell me the trick so that I can remove the wood trim and polish
it.
