I too have a 525iA(E34M50 to be exact) and find the auto slothish at best.
In playing with the A/E/M Selector I found a little (this is relative) more
pep when kept in M (you should see M D or M 3 ......).

If the auto is getting you down, check the archives, there is a guy in the
UK who installed a paddle to control the up and down shifts.  This in
essence created an manual, where the drive controls the gear shift.
