I purchased a new VW a few years back that had some not-so-flattering
stick-on pin striping.  I used my wife's hair dryer on low to warm the
striping and loosen the glue.  It peeled right off.  I then used a mild
fingernail polish remover (again donated by my wife) to take off glue
residue.  I'm not sure if the latter is good for the paint, it didn't seem
to have any ill effects.  I owned the car for 6 years.  I have also used
WD40 to remove gum.

I recommend testing any chemical you plan to use on a discrete location on
the car.  Maybe even under the hood.
