Well, I think it's more than a five hour job. I know, I just did the
same thing to my '84 325e.
You need to remove the exhaust system, the heat sheilds, transmission,
driveshaft, torque converter, flywheel, shifter linkage, AT fluid hoses to
the radiator (they get in the way when installing clutch hydraulics),
brake padel assy.
You will need the following from a 5spd car:
Driveshaft
Guibo (flex disk) -- $56 new -- ouch!
Transmission (duh)
Transmission cross member (yes it is different)
Transmission mounts (2)
Transmission rear seal, and selector shaft seal
Shifter Assy. (now is a very good time for new bushings, and shift
rod knuckle -- use NEW PARTS -- you don't want a sloppy shifter.
Also, now would be a good time to install BL/SS).
Engine rear seal (now is a good time to do it)
Flywheel
Case of beer of your choice (Duane would recomend RR)
Clutch (new)
Pressure Plate (new)
Clutch slave cyl.
Clutch/Brake padel assy.
Clutch Master Cyl.
Clutch hydraulic lines (at hard line, and a rubber line)
-- get these from the donar car you get the master cyl . from
and use the used rubber line if it is in decent shape, as
new ones are $40 (ouch!)
New gaskets for the exhaust system (don't be cheap, you'll be chasing
down leaks if you re-use the old ones).
Some wire, and two .250 Fast On Flag terminals (the right angle kind)
two connect the reverse lights, as on the automatic the reverse switch
is in the shifter assy, and on the manual, it is in the transmission.
Some 1/4" ID hose to run from the brake fluid reservior (sp?) to the
clutch master cyl.
Would you beleive that the brake fluid resrvior on the autoomatci has an
outlet on it for the clutch? It is molded with a "plug" on the end, so
you just need to cut this off (suck out the fluid with a syringe first).
Don't for get to bleed the clutch, and put fresh redline MTL in the
transmission.
It was about a 12 hour, and 12 Yuengling job for me (I drink Yuengling
Lager here in South Central PA, so I guess I don't qualify to be a BuhBuh,
because I don't drink RR, also it aint bad either (hick!)).
Have Fun,
Jay
