That was me!  It was a bent shifter, and there was some contact
with the driveshaft while shifting to 5th gear (but the bend had
nothing to do with that--the lever arm below the socket, the
unbent part, was a fraction too long).  Some other people with
1.9L Z3s have encountered this, and some haven't.  Ben suggested
that the ERK (effort reducing kit) would raise the shifter just
enough to eliminate the contact.
