Sean,
if you can turn the engine over, or even if you can't, check out the
distributor. The lower shaft bearing had a nasty habit of going bad,
which allowed the rotor to spin off center in the cap.
Now think what that would cause? You have a metalic smacking noise that
sounds like it's a bad cam, but really its the distributor shaft
spinning out of alignment in its housing, mounted at the rear of the
head. You also have the rotor spinning out of center, causing the timing
to go to hell. Thus imitating an engine running on two cylinders.
I've had three 84' 318i's - they all did it between 60k-80k miles.
