E36: Oil Starvation/Valve Tap/Kaboom!

You guys are scaring me...  An engine rebuild soon?  I hope not.

My car, on start-up, revs up to about ~1500-2000 RPM (higher than I
think it should go) and this is when I hear this "valve tap" sound.  I
assume this is because the oil is not getting to the valves quick
enough.  Is this true?  Does anyone else's car rev this high on start-up
and create this kind of valve sound?

Probably just being anal, but I'd like to ease my fears....
