There was some discussion about this on alt.autos.tech a little while ago. 

I don't think it's a big deal. The idea is that the throw-out bearing or
fingers in the clutch will wear faster. However, it seems these things
won't wear out before the clutch plate itself wears out and when that
happens, they'll be replaced anyway..

I often put it in neutral at lights, but much of that is a comfort thing. I
can reposition my foot then. Also, I like to coast in neutral slowly
rolling up to stops (it's cool when you don't have to come to a full stop
at all).
