e28 trans ID and bearing ?

Okay, this is a tough one. I have an '86 535i with a 5 spd. transmission. I
also have the shift console type shifter.

The ID on my transmission is 260 0105 090, which Bentley denotes as an
early-260 (Getrag). Is this correct? Given my production date of 9-85, I
should either have a 265 or a late-260.

Here is the interesting part. I am currently working on the clutch. I
ordered a kit that included a new throw out bearing. The bearing is the same
as the old one. The old one though was not seated against the release lever
on its guides. It was turned so that the guides hung out in the opening of
the release lever. This effectively shortens the bearing by about 1/2 inch.

Here is my theory. The transmission was replaced with an early-260. Instead
of using a shorter throw out bearing for the older model transmission, they
just turned the existing throw out bearing to shorten it.

What should I do to make sure I get the right throw out bearing?

Please comment and let me know if my facts and logic are correct.

Chris
