Z3/2.8L Harmon-Kardon Stereo Problem

I have a question for the collective mass. A friend has a '97, Z3/2.8
with the Harmon-Kardon stereo. She is having intermittent distortion
from the sub-woofer. She took the car back to the dealer the first
time and found that the sub-woofer was not ground properly, so they
fixed it. Then the woofer blew, and they replaced it. Now she gets
these intermittent problems with distortion, even with the same
music, i.e. same song, etc.., where it sounds terrible, really cracks,
and she wants to know if others have had the same problem, and did 
they get it fixed. She has information that BMW improved the system 
in '98,  but she wants to know what those exact improvements are. 
Does any have knowledge of any Service Bulletins concerning this issue? 
Or does anyone have any solution?
She has gone as far as to take the issue up with BMW NA, and she feels
that the dealer is just giving her the "run-around".
