86 325 acceleration problems

I have an auto. 86 325 that has some problems accelerating. When 
I am at a stop and then punch the gas, the car will 
start to move slowly and then all of a sudden the car will
take off. It is almost like a delayed reaction to pushing 
on the gas. When the car first starts up it is most noticable;
however it randomly continues throught out the entire drive. 

I was wondering if anyone else experienced this problem and how they 
fixed it. I already invested time and money on the replacement of an 
O2 sensor, this is not the problem! My mechanic wants to try a new ECU.
Well, I don't want to spend my savings on a new ECU when it could just 
be a worn out sensor or electrical short. I find it hard to believe that 
this is due to ECU failure. Let me know if you have any ideas.
