A rubber and a dead blow hammer are two totally different creatures. And, I
won't enumerate the difference for fear that some Nahdia type or similar might
turn it into a flame fest. Hint, you cannot hammer a nail with either a rubber
mallet, or dead blow hammer. And, a dead blow hammer will set your budget back
some. 

I personally use a 1 1/2# hammer. For subborn rotors or wheels which the
hammer won't loosen, try using just 3 lugs, don't tighten them all the way and
drive in a fixed radius circle, tap brakes once in a while. Worked great on
MGs with wire wheels and everything since then. No hammer, no rebound onto
your knees etc. Let the damn car do the work.
