Oil Changes for `99 M3?

Greetings BMW enthusiasts:
I finally took delivery of my `99 M3 Coupe a few days ago, Titanium 
Silver/Black.  The first recommended oil change is at 8500 miles!  I was 
told by the dealer that I could bring it in at 3000 and pay for the 
service myself.  The BMW 3 year scheduled maintenance that is free for 
the first 3 years would only cover the recommended maintenance schedule.  
Therefore my oil change at 8,500 or 9000 miles would be free but not the 
previous ones.  Any suggestions on the best approach to oil changes for 
the car?  I would appreciate it if you could post some recommendations 
on the best oil to use.  I have seen many enthusiasts rave about Mobil 
1.  What type is recommended?
