The thumbwheel controls the dash vent temp only (both center and side)
and if I remember correctly (it's been awhile since mine worked right)
only controls the flow of hot air. It is continuously adjustable and
is designed to allow you to limit the flow of hot air to the dash
vents to allow cooler air to flow from them while the floor vents
provided the heat. As I remember it had very little (if any) effect
when the AC was on.

It was a really nice feature and I miss it.

how the
temp control really works. Does it simply complete a circuit to ground 
(i.e. full on or full off), or does it actually vary the amount of air
coming through
(i.e. variable potentiomenter thingy)?
