Thanks to all who responded to my request for info on tires, especially Tom Klein who has compiled a 73K file of responses on various brands. Looks like the Firestone SZ50's would be a good bet, but when I checked available sizes (duh), the nearest they make is a 255/40-17, which I don't believe will fit on the 7.5" rims, or under the fenders for that matter. So right now I am leaning toward the Toyo Proxies. Though Tire Rack is having a killer sale on Yokohama AVS Intermediates in the stock 235/40-17...($140).
Would have just gone with the Pilots, but I have been doing a great deal of highway business travel in the car, 4000 miles last month alone, which looks like it will continue for the next year or two. Given their lousy treadwear characteristics, the thought of replacing them a couple of times a year is not appealing. Poor wet/light snow weather behavior is also a factor, though I have some 16" Pirelli 210's for serious stuff. Blasting through the Pennsylvania mountains at night in the rain @ 34 def F on bald Pilots is pretty scary.

PS: Did anyone catch that ad in the Washington Post for five 17" BMW tires and wheels that "fit all BMW's"? $525 for all and listed a pager #. Can you say "hot"?
