Suspension

It occurred to me that I don't know what the difference is between the BMW
normal suspension and the BMW "sport" suspension, on say, E46, E39, and
(non-M3) E36.  Having driven a few BMWs, some with sport suspension (E36)
and some without, I really can't tell the difference.

What *is* the effective difference in both feel and performance?  What do
they actually do to the car to implement "sport" suspension on these
(non-M3) models?
