Voltage problem....

	hi,

i have a 1987 bmw 535i with 117,000 miles, and recently, when i started
the car up, i heard a metalic sound.  i took the car in and when the
mechanic heard it, he first thought that it was the fly wheel.  but then
he ran diagnostic check and found that it was simply a voltage problem.
does anyone have or had similar experiences?  thanks....
