<e36> Rear Suspension failure on E36 chassis - inspection?

Over the past year or so, I've seen the many pointers and discussions about
potential rear suspension failures on the e36 cars.

On the web sites and in the threads, I don't recall there being any
discussion of how to inspect your car for this problem.  I've looked at mine
from underneath and of course can't see anything useful, and I've removed my
rear seat cushion and can't see anything other than sound deadening
material.  Also, I've checked the haynes manual and could find anything
useful.

My question is, can one easily inspect the area which usually fails?  If so,
how and from where?
