Interesting. So, both the Euro E36 M3 engine and the US E36 M3
engine are called S52? And yet they are so different? Does anyone
have a list of what's the same and what is different?

Oh, and where do you get a US spec motor with 286hp? You have to
get aftermarket software to get a 7000 redline; but that won't get
you to 286hp. And does the fact that the Euro S52 can do 7400rpm
imply that the US one should be able to? Or are their internal
part differences that prevent that?

S52 3.2 6 4 286 @7000 231 @3600 96 on E36 M3 late model US
                                               single VANOS
S52 3.2 6 4 321 @7400 258 @3250 96 on E36 M3 late model Euro
                                               double VANOS

As it turns out, this raises more questions than it answers for me.
But thanks for posting the pointer, very interesting,
