<E30> cut-out at 5k+rpms (pls.help!)

Hello Digest,


I have come across a problem with my '88 325iS recently........the car will
cut-out (and the "check engine" light comes on) at 5.5-6k rpms while at WOT in
3rd/4th/ and 5th gears. It has never happened in 1st or 2nd gear and it has no
particular frequency (it will do it twice in a day, or sometimes it will not
happen for a week). It has also happened at varying ambient temps. (55-85
degrees F). 

While it is just annoying on the street, it happened once while entering the
esses at Road Atlanta (ie _not a good thing_!!!). I need to fix it ASAP, so
any and all help is _greatly_ apreciated. 

I am thinking bad cat / O2 sensor, maybe distributor??? BTW, the car has 215k
miles on the original cat (soon to be discarded in preparation for ITS), at
least 60k on the current O2 sensor, and a Jim C. chip.
