92 e36 oxygen sensor removal

I was wondering if anybody new an easy way to remove the oxygen sensor?  
It seems there is not enough clearance for tools to take it out because 
of the way the sensor is positioned on the exhaust pipe.  Do I have to 
pull down the exhause piping?  Should I buy the special socket for the 
oxygen sensor?  Your suggestions would be very appreciated.
