Rental Cars <wob>

...reminded me of the first time the Golden Gate Chapter tried to hold a
Top Driver Shootout.  The concept was:  put all the drivers in the same
car to eliminate the car as a variable, and see who really is the best
driver.  Unfortunately, no one would donate either their Bimmer or the
several sets of wheels and tires we would probably need to do this.

So a couple of members went out and rented some cars (I won't say
from which company).  They showed up with a Thunderbird and a
Taurus.

Before we could get everyone through the first set of runs, we had
shredded the front tires on the T-bird and were well on our way to
shredding the tires on the Taurus.  Plus, everyone was complaining that
the cars just didn't handle like Bimmers (well, DUH!).  They carefully
returned the cars and prayed that no one would notice the tires.

The GGC eventually developed a car classification system that allows us
to handicap the cars, and all subsequent Top Driver Shootouts were
done in our own cars.

FWIW, there have been lots of rental cars at O-fest drivers' schools, so
this is not a new concept.  Except for the "race" part...
