What other diff's fit an E 34??

Greetings from beautiful overcast and hazy So. Cal.(today)
Can anybody tell me for SURE what other model differentials will bolt
in to my E 34 1995 540i 6 speed?? My stock gearing is something like
2.86 or 2.93. Awhile back I spoke with a gentleman who had put a 3.15
L/S diff from (he believed) a 530 into his 1995 540. The wrecking yards
seem to scratch their heads and say "I'am not sure" So I thought I'd
test the tried and true waters of the digest to see if anybody knew for
sure. (BTW the dealers NO help on this one.)
I'd prefer a 3.15 or a 3.25 ratio(leaning towards the 3.25) Any help
would be greatly appreciated....
