E36 M3 missed shifts: advice from 5-time F1 champ

I have no opinion on what causes E36 M3 missed
shifts, but I thought I'd add something. I read an
interview a while back with the late 5-time world
driving champion Juan Manuel Fangio, who gave
advice similar to 0-time world driving champion
Scott. He said that it was only *after* several
years as a professional racer that he realized
he'd been shifting gears all wrong. He had been
using a white-knuckle death grip on the gearshift
(& wheel), rather than caressing it with only 3
fingers (index, middle & ring) and pretending it
was an egg. (I could make crude analogies to
Monica Lewinsky here, but I won't). So you
probably shouldn't install a Hurst pistol-grip
shifter in your M3 unless you wanna use it
exclusively for drag racing.

If you treat the shift lever as an egg, and caress
it from gear to gear, you
should have no trouble. Manhandle it, and who
knows what will happen. Look at
the section of Bob Bondurant's book that deals
with driving position if you
want a better description.
