Perfect example: the Porsche 911.  When it first came out I think it
weighed about 2000 lbs.; what is it now, over 3000?  Sure, it's faster,
handles better, runs better, is more comfortable, etc., but by all
accounts it's not really a sports car anymore either.  Even the
(supposedly) ultimate modern-retro sports car, the Mazda Miata, has
blimped up in the ten years since it came out.  The American mindset in
general seems to be the bigger the better, and since we are a major
market for these cars, the makers do what they must to sell them here.
