BMW has had 2 weights of synthetic recently. They've had 5W-30 for
quite some time for winter use I expect. With the recent E46 class
coming out they have added 10W-40 also. I still prefer 15W-50 for my
car. Since BMW only has the synthetic in individual bottles, I take
Mobil 1 in and give it to them in the 15W-50 weight and ask them to
give me the 7 quarts of 5W-30 which I pour into the wife's mini-van.
From postings it appears that not all BMW dealers are enlightened and
give you synthetic even if you ask for it. If someone is going to the
dealer it would be useful to ask them for the number of the bulletin
announcing this change so we're armed to do battle with the gods of
cheapness.

Learned something new from my BMW dealers service manager.
My 98 M3 is ready for its first oil change. I called to find out what
weight synthetic I should buy and he told me BMW changed to synthetic a year
ago for all cars covered by the "free" maintenance program. They
automatically put in synthetic oil. He also said this will be true for all
99 models regardless of whether they're covered by the "free" maintenance
program.
Maybe you all knew this but it was news to me. I was ready to buy Mobil 1
from Wal Mart on their $2.99 per quart special.
