The 1999 5 Series is well poised to continue the record breaking sales
performance that is has achieved since the latest 5 Series introduction. Along
with a host of equipment changes, 1999 brings a new sibling to the model
range.
5 Series sport wagons
The biggest news for the 1999 5 Series is the re-introduction of the 528i and
540i sport wagons. After a four year absence from the market, the new 5 Series
sport wagon are well equipped to compete in a category that grew 15% over the
last year. The new 5 Series sport wagons will offer active and independent
thinking BMW intends the ultimate blend of performance and practicality. The
new 5 Series sport wagons will be the most responsive wagons in America.
The key product features of both sport wagons are as follows:
* Same outstanding balance and dynamic character of 5 Series sedans.
* Dynamic Stability Control, standard on 540iT and optional on 528iT, combined
with standard AST offers the practical benefits of all-wheel-drive without the
additional weight and cost.
* New aluminum compact rear axle specifically designed for the sport wagon.
Eliminates shock towers from cargo area to create a flat and rectangular
loading area.
* Self-leveling rear suspension standard on 540iT, optional on 528iT and
included on 528iT sport package.
* Sport package similar to those offered on sedans available on both models.
* Slim, coupe-like, powerful and elegant styling of 5 Series is retained on
sport wagons.
* Standard roof rails.
* Standard soft-close tailgate and special cargo lighting system.
* High payload and trailer load capacity.
* Optional retractable load floor - slides/extends approximately 2 feet beyond
tailgate and is capable of supporting of up to 165 pounds.
540iT specific features:
* Same 4.4L 32-valve V8 as 540i/A, the only midsize luxury wagon offered in
the US with a V8. The performance on the 540iT will allow it to claim the
position of " the fastest production wagon in America".
* Standard 5-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic.
* Standard performance rear axle (3.15) and torque converter for improved
acceleration
528iT specific features:
* Same 2.8L 24-valve inline 6-cylinder as in 528i.
* Standard 5-speed manual transmission, optional 4-speed automatic. A manual
transmission is not offered on the Mercedes E-class or Audi A6 wagons.
Look for additional information about the new sport wagons in the up-coming
order guide, which will be available in early August.
5 Series overall changes:
The 1999 model year brings changes to enhance the 5 Series' reputation for
performance, individuality and value. These changes affect both the sedans and
sport wagons.
* Enhanced 528i/T Premium Package- the 15" cross-spoke alloy wheels in the
package are upgraded to 16" and auto dimming mirror is added.
* Revised 528i/T Sport Package - the package in reconfigured to offer the
customer the performance equipment at a lower price. Leather upholstery and
metallic paint are removed and the multi-functional M-sport steering wheel is
added. Leather upholstery and metallic paint may be added as a freestanding
option or by selecting the new sports-premium package described below. The
528iT sports package includes self-leveling rear suspension. Electric sports
seats are now available on the 528i/T sport package if leather is ordered.
* New 528i/T Sport-Premium Package - for the first time enables the contents
of the sport package and premium package to be ordered together. This allows
the customer to have the wood trim and the sports package without creating a
special order.
* 540iA/T Sport Package - A performance rear axle ration (3.15) and torque
converter are added to the package for improved acceleration. Wheels are
changed to the 17" radial styled wheels that were previously optional on the
540i. Mixed width wheels are included on the sedan sport package (8" front/9"
rear). Steptronic transmission and the multifunctional M-sport steering wheel
are also added.
* Dynamic Stability Control (DCS III) in now offered as standard equipment on
all 540i models (previously only offered 540iA) and is available as an option
on the 528i/T.
* New Cold Weather Package - Combines heated seats, heated steering wheel and
the new. For 1999, headlamp washers.
* New standard Car and key memory feature.
* New free-standing options:
* Xenon headlamps
* Park Distance Control
* Revised color and trim choices.
Despite increased competition from the Mercedes E-class, Lexus GS and upcoming
Jaguar S-type, we are confident that these 1999 changes will bring excitement
to the 5 Series range and allow us to build upon the current success of the 5
Series.
