E39 M5 article in BMW Magazine

In the 2/1998 issue of BMW Magazine (which just arrived on 8/26, go figure!)
hidden among the fine watch, jewelry and clothing ads is a 4-page story on
the upcoming M5. While the article is well written and informative, it does
contradict itself by quoting both 295kw (400bhp) and 300kw (408bhp) figures
for the engine output.

A 2-page interview with Adolf Prommesberger, CEO of BMW M GmbH, follows the
M5 article. What I find particularly endearing is his response to the
interviewer's question:

Must everyone who works for M also have an "M bug"?

"Enthusiasm for cars is paramount. We talk about an "M chromosome", which
all our workers have. Many of our technicians and engineers can drive a car
at the limits of what it can do. Although it is not mandatory to drive the
northern loop of the Nurburgring in the M3 in under 8.5 minutes, it doesn't
hurt either."

We enthusiasts should rejoice that such a man is at the helm of BMW M.

Cheers,
