I can tell you that it is illegal in CA to tamper with or remove ANY of 
the emissions control equipment! Therefore, if you remove the cat. you 
are a bad boy and have committed a crime.. hehe...All smog stations in 
CA are required to do a visual inspection of the emissions control 
system. If a part is missing or disconnected, the car immeadiately 
fails, without ever being sniffed.  I have been to many shops and some 
do the visual, some don't.  The only tech I can remember looking for my 
cat was when he noticed the headers on my 92 Toy p/up (wonder if he saw 
the NOS too?).  So, I suppose you could slip by a tech here and there, 
but I wouldn't chance it...I would swap it out before I tested it if I 
were you...Tim
