<E36> My recirculate button won't stay on

An annoying (IMO) trait of the E36 is that its Recirculate button
automatically turns off when you leave the car more than a few
minutes.  I'd rather it stayed how I left it -- or always turn
itself _on_ if I leave the car more than a few minutes.

Does anyone know how to fix that??
Or is there some black box computer chip controlling that?
