'87 E30 325iC 5sp Transmission question

How do i check if i have enough transmission oil? How do I add more oil if
there isn't? Would make sense to r&r all the gaskets and change all the oil?
I see some leakage at the rear end of the tranny (where the shaft going to
the differential exits) and I can feel some stiff shifting in the morning.
