This always screams to me that the person probably never owned a nice
car before. So once they can afford one, they think they have to go to
extreme effort to really spiff it up. Instead, they spend a lot of
money trashing the resale value of the car.

Just like in the old joke about a guy winning a gold medal and loving
it so much he had it bronzed...
