Unless you build a heat shield enclosure around the the open filter
element, you will lose horsepower because the engine will intake hot air
from the radiator fan wash.  By the time you're done designing a complete
heat shield enclosure, you'll have about the same HP at the Motorsport
airbox from the 90-on E30 M3.  A shielded cone-type filter works better on
the E36 M3 than it does on the E30.
