I've got a few quick questions about Valentine 1
radar/laser detectors, so
please bear with me:
- - - Should I get laser protection?
I'd say yes. Cops are getting laser guns somewhere
daily; if they don't have now in your jurisdiction
they will eventually. Our local tv news recently
had a story about cops gloating over finally
giving tickets to people with radar detectors.
Problem is, even the V1 won't reliably catch laser
traps (any reports from people on this?)
- - - What's this stuff I hear about BMW highbeams
freakin' out the V1?
Problem is history; they fixed it. Seems older V1s
would "reboot" if you flashed lights as though
turned off & on; possibly a voltage drop or
something.
Somebody mentioned that you can ask to have your
V1 modified in some way to
prevent your highbeams from __________??? (voltage
spike maybe?)
Someone told me Valentine can add resistor or
something to fix problem in older V1s.
- - - Are there any other concerns/upgrades (like
the above) that I need to be
worried about before I make the plunge?
Can't think of any.
- - - Any mounting tips or lessons learned in an
E34 application? I want to
hardwire mine somehow, so suggestions would be
welcome. And should I bother
with the remote display kit? Are there any other
accessory hardware that
may be useful?
Hardwiring is the way to go; V1 lighter socket
wouldn't work for crap in my E36 & probably other
BMWs. Fit poorly & V1 would reboot when the plug
was even slightly jogged (like over bumps). Can't
offer specifics but sure someone will; wiring into
dome light worked great for me; only 2" of power
cord protrude from rubber seal between headliner &
windshield.
Hope this helps.
