The problem probably lies at the other end of the car. Check the speedometer
pulse sender (Bentleys's description). Look at the back rhs of the diff. You
should see an electrical connection, pull that and clean it. If that doesn't
help, unbolt the sender and clean it. As a last resort get a new one, not
that expensive. Same thing happened to my 86 325i, took months of hitting
and head scratching to find it. I think it's covered in the E30 FAQ.
