Dave, a cheaper and almost certainly easier swap would be from an E36
M3; motor and tranny.  Heck, if you shopped around you might come up
with an autobox to make driving with a broken leg that much easier. 
Judging from the level of judgement many of the posters on this digest
have shown there should be _plenty_ of 'em laying around in junkyards
now.

The M5, on the other hand, has the _big_ six which is heavier and harder
to fit in.  It's also a lot rarer and more expensive.  With the weight
advantage from the S50 vs the S38 you'll do almost as well and you can
take the money you'll save in other mods to get you a nice air pump and
some brakes.
