If you're right, then it appears that it is a screw that is holding the
shift knob in place. Therefore, by force pulling (as others have
recommended) aren't you also stripping the screw slot (and/or the screw)
thus breaking the mechanism?

the screw is holding the shift knob in place. but first you
need to unscrew the screw inorder to remove the knob. there is
NO force pulling involved. after the loosening of the screw, the
knob can be easily pull up. as far as the recommendation of others
that you hear, which suggested hard yanking of the knob, yes, it
will strip the screw slot, and break the mechanism.
