6 Series Exhaust

I have a 88 M6 that I will be changing the muffler on shortly. I have
managed to come across a unit (cat-back) from Stebro Canada (stainless and
7yr warranty) for $600 U.S.. BMW Honolulu quoted $1100 for stock system and
mainland dealers quoted around $852 (does not include 25% off for BMWCCA). 
I guess it's the cost
of living in paradise? I just carry around a tube of Vaseline when I have
to buy something here...since I have to take it in the ... 
Anyway, I am wondering about Euro models. Did they come without a catalytic
converter?  Would the amount of emissions and stronger exhaust smell
out-weigh the performance and fuel flow gain? Anyone remove the cat from
their system?  Can I successfully omit my cat considering the O2 sensor?
Opinions welcome...
