The best advice I can give someone who's inexperienced on ice and snow is:
 
(1) 4WD will help you get going, but it doesn't help you stop any better.
 
(2) The first time it snows, take whatever car you have to a vacant parking 
lot with no obstructions.  Slide the car around, make it skid, get the feel 
of what it's like to drive on snow, and practice how to control the car.  It 
will help your confidence and driving skills immensely.
