After describing all the same sorta things I tried to cure the damn
problem - I'll make it REAL SHORT and REAL SWEET:

Try this:

Open plug gap to 0.042" - use only the correct Bosch Silver plugs

Adjust valves to 0.002" to 0.003" OVER (wider) than spec.. with
the engine dead cold.

Betch'a it cures it.

Cost is nil.

The '87 3.5 is notorious for this behavior - and the cure is
above. Won't go into all the long details - but give it a try
the cost is nothing.
