<E30> SI Board battery change

I had an interesting situation the other day. I changed the Ni-Cad batteries
of the inspection board on my 325i. I did according to the FAQ I found on
the WWW. After doing the reset correctly, I started the engine (which was
cold) and the temperature gauge went straight up to red. Then, I went for a
ride, and after a couple of miles it normalized. It is now working well, but
I still wonder... Can anybody tell me what happened?
