a couple of things to check:
- - spark plug wires - what condition are they in ? My 320i started
getting your problem and when I poked at the plug wires one fell apart
in my hand.. when really torqued the engine would shift the wires and
break some connections..
- - fuel filter.. when was the last time it was changed ? more than a
year ago? change it.. it might be full of crap
- - fuel pump.. is your in-tank transfer pump working ? if it is dead
and the main fuel pump is dying it might not be providing enough
pressure..

Don't worry about having a 'slow' BMW.. straight line speed only costs
more money.. but keeping your speed up in the twisties requires
*driver* skill.. a much better thing to concentrate on IMHO.
