Any idea why my A/C is screeching?

My A/C recently developed what can best be described as a, "screech."
Intermittently, when I turn it on, and it, "kicks in," it sounds like a belt
is slipping, or even worse.  Any ideas of what this might be, or how I might
fix it?  I noticed the other day that my local Auto Parts store carried some
sort of A/C oiling system that you inject into the low pressure side of the
A/C system using a 'screw-type' injector.  It supposedly, adds lubrication
to the freon.  Think this might help?  Any ideas?
