I did this just the other day.  I was in there mucking with the wires =
for my stereo (sony replacement), put everything back together, and the =
OBC lights were dim.  Couldn't figure out what had happened.  Finally, =
the last thing I did was to check the bulb behind the OBC.  Actually, I =
did this first and it did not *appear* to be bad...  After wearing out =
my patience, I checked the bulbs again and one was  bad.  Picked a =
replacement up at the dealer and it cost over $21!!! =20

Here's how I did it....

I believe that the OBC was screwed in there, but you might try (ever so) =
gently prying it out first.  If that works, then ignore the rest of =
this.

To remove that panel, there are four screws to be removed, one behind =
the hazards flasher, one behind the plate to the left of the defroster, =
and two bolts under neath, one under the fan speed controller and one =
under the temp. adjuster (These two are a real pain!).  The vent =
switches also hold the panel in there so you have to deal with that, =
too.  Remove the little slider knobs and a thin plate can be pried off.  =
You should be able to remove the panel now.  Note that the air =
conditioning assembly is mounted behind this panel, so don't try to yank =
it out with the panel -- it should remain in there.  When the panel =
comes out, I think there are four screws which hold the OBC on to that =
panel.  Removing those screws allows easy access to this thing, although =
it may not be necessary, I don't remember exactly.

Anyway, now to the good part.  On the top right hand side of the OBC is =
a funky area which allows you to pull it out with pliers.  What comes =
out is the back-lighting display for the OBC.  It has a small =
circuit-board with a bunch of plastic supporting it and two small bulbs. =
 Check those bulbs carefully and also make sure the traces on the =
circuit board are still intact.  If you find that this is the defective =
piece, as I did, you can do one of two things: replace that piece (at a =
cost of $21.??) or try to put new bulbs on it, which would be much =
cheaper.  Anyway, it should be an easy task.  While you are at it, there =
is another light behind the OBC in the back in the center. I wasn't =
quite sure what that did (does anyone know?)  I replaced that, too =
because the price was right.  Get this, from the dealer, that light was =
available and it was less than $1.00!!!!!  I couldn't believe it-I had =
the parts guy re-check the price.  He told me that BMW was having a =
bunch of problems with that light and that was the reason it was so =
cheap.  So, I replaced it, too, although I don't believe that it needed =
fixing.

After putting everything back in the way you got it out, all should be =
as good as new!
