E30 camshaft lobe -- black spots

Hi all,
    Tonight I removed the cover on my 1984 318i (113,000 miles) and
everything looked pretty good, except that I noticed some tiny black dots on
the polished part of each lobeof the camshaft.  Anyone know what might cause
this?  The spots seemd smooth.  Is there any way of telling whether the
canshaft is wearing or not?  Everything was sludge and varnish free and
seemed tight.  Also, I've been having to use 93 oct gas to keep it form
pinging.  Is this normal?  Anyone else with this experience?
    To those who responded about the other E30 I was planning to part out--my
apologies--beacuse of lack of interest, I've decided to abandon the idea.
